Blood Oranges are a variation of the popular citrus fruit with a dark, rich, deep crimson color which along with other fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, grapes and red cabbage obtain their color from the polyphenol known as anthocyanin. Blood oranges are a good source of Vitamin C, Fiber and Potassium which are all important nutrients for the body’s daily function.
I actually mistakenly purchased blood oranges on my last grocery trip. After they sat in the refrigerator for a few days, I decided to develop a refreshing and delicious Summer Cocktail one Friday night. I love all things fragrant especially my favorite spice ginger so I added it to the simple syrup with a few cloves and it really elevates the flavor of the punch.
This recipe makes a pitcher or (4) cocktails of 6oz each which makes for a great small crowd during your next gathering. You can also make a non alcoholic version to this recipe by making a few substitutions found below:
4 oz Dark Rum can be substituted for 100% 4 oz Cranberry Juice or Pomegranate Juice
10 oz Sparkling Wine can be substituted for 10 oz of Non Alcoholic Cider

- In a large pitcher, combine simple syrup, blood orange juice, lime juice and rum mixing well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
